The South Korean-operated container ship Shanghai Voyager rescued four seafarers after the Indonesian tug capsized in rough weather in the South China Sea.
The tug AOM 787 was towing an empty barge from the Anambas Islands to Serasan in Indonesia’s Riau Islands on 25 July. As the weather worsened, the tug experienced stability problems, and the crew released the tow to regain stability. The measure proved unsuccessful, and the vessel capsized around midday the following day.
The four crewmembers escaped into a liferaft. Several hours later, MV Shanghai Voyager spotted their distress flares and headed to the scene.
The container ship’s crew rescued all four seafarers despite rough seas. The master then alerted the Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) and diverted to Matak Island.
A rescue boat from the Natuna Search and Rescue Office met the container ship and transferred the survivors ashore. Medical checks found they were all in good condition.
Natuna Search and Rescue Office chief said distress flares helped the survivors attract the attention of the passing ship. He also urged seafarers to keep emergency equipment, including EPIRBs, flares and waterproof flashlights, in good working order.
