The Liberian-flagged containership Ionikos lost approximately 85 containers overboard while departing the Port of Casablanca after encountering heavy swells that caused the vessel to roll sharply.
The 52,427 dwt ship, owned by Greek interests and operating under charter to Hapag-Lloyd, had completed cargo operations in Casablanca and was bound for Barcelona when the incident occurred late on February 26. The 4,360-TEU vessel is currently anchored about six nautical miles offshore.
Authorities deployed patrol boats and a helicopter to locate and secure drifting containers near the harbor entrance. Tugboats were assigned to monitor and stabilize floating boxes, while recovery operations continue.
According to local media, the lost cargo included car parts, furniture and consumer goods. At least one container reportedly broke open, with packaged food products washing ashore on nearby beaches.
