EU approves Maersk’s acquisition of Hamburg Sud

Maersk Line won antitrust approval for its gaining of Hamburg Sud after approving to pull the German company out from some trade routes to address competition concerns.

The German company will withdraw from the group on trade routes connecting northern Europe and Central America, the west coast of South America and the Middle East.

The proposed acquisition will strengthen the Maersk’s presence in global trade, in particular in Latin America where Hamburg Sud has been established and also will maintain a healthy level of competition to the benefit of many EU companies that depend on these container shipping services.

Hamburg Sud which achieved the second place among 20 containers is part of the Oetker Group and owns 130 container vessels while Maersk has a fleet of more than 600 ships.
