Hapag-Lloyd has announced plans to deploy Internet of Things (IoT) technology across its container fleet to enhance real-time tracking and improve operational visibility.

The German liner operator will equip containers with IoT sensors that continuously collect and transmit data on the location and condition of cargo units. The initiative aims to reduce reliance on traditional tracking methods such as manual GPS pings and to bridge gaps in visibility during long ocean voyages and hinterland transport legs.

The IoT sensors will provide real-time updates on container status, including movement, position, and predefined condition triggers. This data is expected to help Hapag-Lloyd and its customers better monitor cargo, detect potential delays early, and enhance overall supply chain transparency.

Deployment will begin with select trades and container types, with a phased rollout across the wider fleet planned. Hapag-Lloyd has not disclosed exact numbers of containers to be fitted initially but indicates that the system will eventually cover a substantial portion of its global 2 million container pool.

The move comes amid increasing demand from shippers for end-to-end visibility, driven by complex routing, port congestion, and variable inland transport conditions. IoT-enabled tracking is seen as a key technology to help reduce uncertainty and improve service reliability.

Hapag-Lloyd expects the new technology to support planning, reduce operational friction points, and offer customers a clearer picture of container movements from origin to destination.
