A dock worker has died after the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged container vessel Pacific 88 suddenly listed during cargo operations at Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya, Indonesia, causing dozens of containers to plunge into the water.

The incident unfolded on 2 February, when Pacific 88 was undergoing loading and unloading at South Jamrud Pier. A loss of stability caused the vessel to heel sharply toward the quay, resulting in approximately 30 containers falling overboard into adjacent waters.

Rescue teams and port authorities responded immediately; several workers were recovered from the water, with five reported pulled to safety. One port worker, reported missing after the collapse of cargo and subsequent fall into the bay, was later found deceased approximately 1.6 km from the scene. His body was evacuated to a local hospital.

Port stevedores and emergency services work to secure the ship and recover lost containers, Investigators have launched an inquiry into the vessel’s stability management, cargo distribution, and operational procedures at the time of the incident.
