APM Terminals, Maersk’s terminal operating arm, has announced a long-term investment of more than $160 million to modernize and expand its container terminal at Puerto Progreso, Yucatán, Mexico. The 19-year plan, unveiled jointly with regional authorities, includes major infrastructure upgrades, new handling equipment, digitalization of logistics processes, and sustainability initiatives.
The investment comes as Puerto Progreso records a 10% increase in throughput in 2025, driven by nearshoring and shifting trade routes. In recognition of this growth, the Mexican government has extended APM Terminals’ concession at the port for another 19 years.
Key elements of the modernization program include the purchase of two additional mobile cranes, warehouse expansions, improved cold storage, upgraded security systems, and the introduction of low-energy technologies such as LED lighting. Digital tracking systems will also be rolled out to streamline interactions with importers, exporters, and customs brokers.
On a broader scale, Mexico’s government is advancing parallel redevelopment projects at Puerto Progreso. These include dredging and widening of the navigation channel to accommodate larger vessels, an 80-hectare expansion across container, cruise, grain, and general cargo terminals, and improved inland connectivity through the Maya Train railway.
