Passenger ferry and cargo ship collide in Istanbul Strait, 12 injured

On Friday evening, September 19, 2025, a passenger ferry and a Panama-flagged cargo ship collided near Üsküdar’s Salacak district in the Istanbul Strait, Turkey, injuring 12 people.

The ferry Kamil Sayın, operating on the Beşiktaş–Üsküdar route, struck the cargo vessel Artvin. Following the accident, the ferry was safely brought alongside Üsküdar Pier, where passengers were evacuated. The injured were transferred to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The damaged ferry was later moved to Harem, while the cargo ship was towed to Büyükdere in Sarıyer for inspection.

The Istanbul Governor’s Office confirmed that the vessels were removed from the main traffic lane of the Bosphorus after the collision.

An investigation has been launched into the incident. As part of the probe both captains were taken into custody. They are expected to be referred to court.
