Cargo vessel stranded near Kefken with seven crew evacuated

On September 18, the Tanzania-flagged cargo vessel Rapid ran aground near the Pink Rocks off Kefken, Turkey, while en route from Turkey to the Ukrainian port of Chornomorsk. The ship was carrying a cargo of plaster and had seven crew members on board, MarineTraffic reports.

The incident was reported to Türkiye’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure at 05:54 local time. A swift rescue operation was launched, with the General Directorate of Coastal Safety (KEGM) dispatching its fast rescue craft KEGM-10, a land-based response team, and a helicopter. All crew members were safely evacuated without injuries.

Preliminary reports suggest the vessel struck a reef while navigating close to the shoreline. Authorities have begun an investigation into the exact cause of the grounding.

The Rapid, built in 1991, has a carrying capacity of 2,620 tonnes. The vessel measures 81.2 meters in length and 11.33 meters in width.
