Denmark’s shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk has taken delivery of the Bangkok Maersk, the third vessel in its series of six methanol dual-fuel container ships under construction in South Korea.

The 17,480 TEU containership, built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and flying the Danish flag, was officially christened in mid-September. Measuring 351 meters in length with a 56-meter beam, the 198,229 dwt vessel has been classed by the American Bureau of Shipping.

Designed to run on methanol, Bangkok Maersk is expected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 60%. The newbuild represents another step toward Maersk’s ambitious target of achieving net-zero operations by 2040.

Bangkok Maersk is set to join its sister ships Beijing Maersk and Berlin Maersk in the company’s East-West service. This series of large dual-fuel container ships, which also includes the 16,200 TEU Axel Maersk delivered earlier this year, is the first of its kind in the world.
