A coordinated search and rescue operation successfully recovered 14 Indian seafarers on Sunday after their vessel suffered catastrophic engine failure and subsequently sank in the Northern Arabian Sea, approximately 80 nautical miles east of Ras Al Hadd, Oman. The multi-agency response involved Omani authorities, a commercial ro-ro vessel, and U.S. Navy assets operating in the region.
The maritime emergency began when the Indian-flagged mechanized sailing dhow, MSV Virat 1, experienced complete propulsion failure in rough weather conditions. As the disabled vessel began taking on water and sinking, the 14-man crew issued a distress call and abandoned ship into a liferaft.
Omani search and rescue authorities immediately began coordinating emergency responses with nearby ships while a U.S. Navy maritime patrol aircraft deployed to the coordinates. The aircraft crew located the stranded mariners and dropped an airborne search-and-rescue kit containing an additional liferaft, which the seafarers successfully boarded to await surface extraction.
Shortly after, the ro/ro vessel Jabal Ali 9 arrived at the scene to assist. The crew hauled 11 of the mariners safely aboard.
However, deteriorating weather and rough sea conditions caused the remaining liferaft to capsize before the remaining three seafarers could be brought aboard the merchant ship. A helicopter, scrambled from the nearby USA aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, conducted emergency winch rescues to pull the three remaining mariners from the water.
Diplomatic officials from the Embassy of India in Oman confirmed that all 14 crew members are safe, in good health, and currently transiting to Mumbai aboard the diverted commercial vessel.
The emergency unfolded against a backdrop of escalating diplomatic friction between Washington and New Delhi. Indian government officials lodged a formal protest last week following an incident in the Gulf of Oman where three Indian seafarers died aboard the tanker Settebello during a U.S. military blockade enforcement operation.
