A Swedish court has ordered the detention of the master of MV Misje Verde as investigators examine a fatal collision between the cargo ship and a pleasure boat that killed two people.

The accident happened on July 28 southwest of Hakefjord. According to Swedish prosecutors, the 90-metre cargo ship struck a 7–8 metre motorboat from astern while overtaking it. Both vessels were travelling in the same direction.

The impact pushed the pleasure boat beneath MV Misje Verde, causing it to sink in about 20 metres of water. A man and a young boy escaped and a nearby recreational boater rescued them. Rescue teams later recovered the bodies of a woman and her daughter from the wreck and the surrounding area.

Authorities detained the master, a Russian national, on suspicion of causing another person’s death and negligent navigation. Prosecutors argued he could leave Sweden or influence witnesses while the investigation continues. A licensed pilot was also on the bridge when the collision occurred.

Investigators are examining the roles of both the master and the pilot. They will assess whether the crew maintained a proper lookout, carried out the overtaking manoeuvre safely, complied with the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs), used an appropriate speed and sounded the required signals.

MV Misje Verde is a Norwegian-operated general cargo vessel of about 5,300 dwt. Authorities continue to examine voyage data, technical evidence and witness statements while the ship remains available for inspection.

Swedish prosecutors have until August 14 to decide whether to file formal charges.
