The Italian Coast Guard has detained the bulk carrier Tanais Dream (28,600 dwt) in Naples following a port state control inspection that revealed serious deficiencies related to hygiene, crew welfare, and vessel operations, Informare reports.
The Belize-flagged vessel, built in 2003 and manned by an all-Russian crew, arrived from Las Palmas on September 22. The inspection, described as “long and complex,” identified hygiene problems in crew cabins and public areas, including the presence of insects in the galley, storage, and mess. Inspectors also noted that the cook lacked the required certification and that provisions for the next voyage were insufficient.
Technical issues were also reported, including malfunctions in heating and ventilation for crew accommodations and leaks in the engine room from the main engine and generators.
The vessel’s owners and operators have been ordered to correct the deficiencies before departure. The Coast Guard will re-inspect the ship, and clearance to sail will only be granted once all issues are resolved. In addition, the vessel’s master and owner are required to pay an administrative fine of approximately €4,000.
The Tanais Dream is currently carrying a cereal cargo. The vessel has a history of deficiencies in previous inspections, including 16 cited by Turkish authorities last year, but this marks its first official detention.
