Meyer Turku to build another Icon class ship for Royal Caribbean under new long-term agreement

Royal Caribbean Group has ordered a fifth Icon class cruise ship from Finland’s Meyer Turku shipyard, with delivery scheduled for 2028. The agreement also includes an option for a seventh ship in the class, in addition to a previously announced option for a sixth vessel.

Each Icon class ship measures about 250,000 gross tons and can carry up to 7,600 passengers, making them the world’s largest cruise ships. Three vessels of the class are already in service or under construction, with a fourth due in 2027.

The framework agreement provides Meyer Turku with one of the strongest order books in the industry and secures Royal Caribbean’s access to critical building slots. Beyond Icon, the company has signaled plans for a new “Discovery” class to replace its older mid-size ships, though details have not been disclosed.

Royal Caribbean currently has nine cruise ships on order across multiple brands, including the Icon, Oasis, and Edge classes, as well as river vessels and LNG-fueled ships. The company is also expanding its portfolio of land-based destinations, with seven new resorts and private ports planned by 2028.
