Fire injures four crew members aboard a Liberia-flagged containership at Port of Wilmington

A fire broke out aboard the a Liberia-flagged container ship Chiquita Voyager at the Port of Wilmington, Delaware, USA, on Wednesday morning. Flames started in the engine room around 09:30 local time. Smoke quickly spread, prompting an immediate response from the Wilmington Fire Department and multiple regional agencies.

Firefighters boarded the vessel and worked alongside the ship’s onboard teams to suppress the blaze. CO2 flooding was used to control the fire after the engine room was evacuated. Four crew members sustained minor injuries and were transported to hospital. All other crew are safe.

About 70 personnel from fire, EMS, and emergency management units participated in the operation. Fire teams remained on site for several hours to prevent flare-ups and investigate the cause.
