CMA CGM container ship strikes quay and damages bulker in Estonian port

The container ship CMA CGM Mermaid ran into a quay at the Port of Muuga, Estonia, causing structural damage to the pier and to a nearby vessel.

The incident occurred on September 8, as the 204-meter, 31,000 dwt boxship was arriving from Kotka and approaching the container terminal. For undisclosed reasons, the vessel struck head on into quay – its sharp plumb bow sliced several meters into the quay wall. Local reports also confirmed damage to the 182-meter bulk carrier Belasitza, which was berthed alongside and struck at the bow. No injuries were reported.

Following the incident, the CMA CGM Mermaid was listed as aground at the same location and has remained moored at the quay as of September 11. The extent of any damage to the ship itself has not yet been disclosed.

CMA CGM Mermaid is a 2,000 TEU modern house-forward container feeder, one of ten sister ships built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique and Hyundai Heavy Industries. Delivered in 2024, the vessel incorporates a sharp plumb bow designed to improve fuel efficiency and cut CO₂ emissions.
