A seafarer has been killed in the latest attack on merchant shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, while Iran claims it has detained a UAE-owned tanker over new transit rules, Splash 247 reports.

The 76,801-dwt, Liberia-flagged bulker Minoan Dignity was hit by an unknown projectile while sailing about five nautical miles off Oman, maritime security company Vanguard Tech said.

The projectile struck the engine room and killed the chief engineer. Two helicopter evacuation attempts failed, and the Omani Coast Guard was expected to help rescue the crew.

Built in 2004, Minoan Dignity is registered to Asante Management Co and managed by Greece-based Modion Maritime Management.

Meanwhile, Iranian state-linked media reported that a UAE-owned tanker had been detained near Qeshm Island. The vessel was not identified, and neither Iran nor the UAE has officially confirmed the incident.

Iran says ships seeking to transit the Strait of Hormuz must follow a designated route, obtain Iranian approval and pay service fees. Tehran has also confirmed plans to introduce charges for maritime services linked to transit through the strait.
