The crew of the US-flagged cargo ship SLNC York was safely evacuated after the vessel began taking on water in the Pacific Ocean, GCaptain reported, citing operator Schuyler Line Navigation Company (SLNC).

The incident happened on August 18 while the vessel was operating in the Pacific. The crew and technical team took immediate action to control the flooding and keep the ship stable. As a precaution, all crew members were transferred to the nearby Pacific Yantai. No one was injured.

AIS data showed SLNC York was sailing from Honolulu, Hawaii, to Naha, Japan. SLNC is working with the US Coast Guard, Japan Coast Guard and emergency response teams to bring the vessel to port. A support vessel is expected to assist SLNC York during the voyage.

SLNC has not disclosed the vessel’s exact location, the extent of the damage or the port where it will be taken. The cause of the water ingress is still under investigation.

Built in 2010, SLNC York is a 141.6-meter multipurpose Ro-Ro and heavy-lift cargo ship with a deadweight of about 9,500 metric tons. It has two 350-ton cranes and operates under the US Maritime Security Program, which provides US-flagged vessels for potential Department of Defense sealift needs during war or national emergencies.
