MSC Cruises is exploring the use of its cruise vessels currently stuck in the Persian Gulf to evacuate seafarers stranded aboard commercial ships.
The proposal was presented on April 14 during an industry event in Miami Beach. The company is now in discussions with the International Maritime Organization, while stressing that any operation will depend on security clearances allowing vessels to safely exit the region.
At least six cruise ships – including MSC Euribia, Aroya, Celestyal Discovery, Celestyal Journey, Mein Schiff 4 and Mein Schiff 5 – remain in Gulf waters, unable to depart due to the ongoing кризис.
Together, these vessels can accommodate up to 17,000 people, creating a potential corridor for the evacuation of large numbers of seafarers currently stuck at anchor.
The situation remains fluid, with no confirmed timeline for departure. MSC has already reduced crew levels on some vessels and cancelled upcoming sailings, as uncertainty continues to affect operations across the region.
The initiative highlights growing concern within the industry over crew welfare, as around 20,000 seafarers are estimated to be stranded across vessels in the region amid heightened geopolitical tensions.
