Greek containership owner Costamare has expanded its newbuilding programme, increasing its series of 3,100 TEU vessels to a total of 10 ships following an additional order placed with a Chinese shipyard.

The New York-listed company confirmed that four more mid-sized containerships have been contracted, with deliveries scheduled between the fourth quarter of 2027 and the fourth quarter of 2028. Each vessel has already secured medium-term charter employment beginning immediately after delivery, continuing Costamare’s strategy of pairing newbuild orders with forward charter coverage.

The latest deal builds on the company’s return to the newbuilding market last year after a six-year hiatus. Costamare initially ordered four vessels at Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard before expanding the contract to six ships. Those units are expected to be delivered between the second quarter of 2027 and the first quarter of 2028 and will commence eight-year time charter agreements once handed over.

With the additional order, the total number of 3,100 TEU vessels in the series rises to ten, reflecting growing confidence in demand for mid-sized container tonnage capable of serving regional and feeder trades.

According to the company’s latest fleet update, Costamare currently operates 79 containerships with a combined capacity of about 551,000 TEU, including vessels under construction. The expansion of the orderbook signals continued investment in modern tonnage amid steady charter demand across several container shipping segments.
