A crewmember of the boxship Leto was rescued after falling into a cargo hold at the Port of Algeciras, Safety4Sea reported.
The incident occurred on October 11 at approximately 08:30 a.m. local time. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Algeciras received an emergency call from the container vessel, reporting that a crewmember had fallen about 5 meters into the cargo hold.
Due to the stowage of cargo, which obstructed overhead access to the hold, a standard airlift evacuation by helicopter was deemed unfeasible. Consequently, Salvamento Marítimo rapidly mobilized the rescue vessel Salvamar Denebola to the scene.
The team carried out a complex vertical extraction, utilizing the ship’s own deck crane to safely winch the casualty from the confined space. The crewmember was successfully recovered from the hold and transferred to the Salvamar Denebola for transport ashore. The entire operation was completed in under two hours.
The injured seafarer was immediately handed over to local Emergency Medical Services (EMS) for hospitalization. He was reported to be in serious condition.
