A fatal engine room fire aboard Singapore-flagged bulk carrier Mandy has claimed the lives of two crew members.
The fire broke out inside the engine room on February 17, just shy of its scheduled Yantai arrival. Two seafarers were fatally injured during the incident. One crew member has been airlifted to a hospital for further treatment.
The fire was eventually brought under control using the vessel’s fixed firefighting systems and boundary cooling procedures. There were no reports of cargo involvement or structural hull damage. The vessel is reported stable and will be towed to Yantai Port.
The 295-meters-long bulk carrier is managed by Pacific Rim Shipmanagement. At the time of the incident, the vessel was sailing from Singapore. Its crew consisted of 25 Myanmar nationals.
Flag-state authorities are expected to conduct a formal investigation into the cause of the fire, including technical, procedural and human-factor elements.
