Two fireworks launch barges caught fire during a summer festival in Yokohama, Japan, on Monday night, August 4, after pyrotechnics misfired and landed on the vessels, CAN reported.
Five workers jumped into the sea to escape the blaze and were rescued by emergency services. One was hospitalized with minor injuries.
The barges were part of a planned 25-minute display featuring 20,000 fireworks. Local media reported that organizers told investigators they had “lost control of the fireworks on the boats.” The incident prompted the immediate cancellation of the event. Police and coast guard officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
Fireworks festivals are a major part of Japan’s summer traditions, attracting large crowds.
