German shipping giant Hapag-Lloyd has entered into a new multi-year agreement with Shell Western LNG for the supply of liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG), strengthening its transition to low-emission fuels.
The deal, effective immediately, extends the companies’ cooperation launched in 2023 and is aimed at scaling up the use of alternative marine fuels to cut carbon emissions. Bio-LNG, produced from organic waste such as crop residues, animal manure and food scraps, is considered a key component of Hapag-Lloyd’s strategy to reach net-zero fleet operations by 2045.
The fuel is ISCC EU certified, ensuring sustainable feedstock sourcing and verified life-cycle emissions reductions. As a “drop-in” solution, bio-LNG can be used directly in Hapag-Lloyd’s LNG dual-fuel vessels without technical modifications, offering an immediate pathway to reduce carbon intensity across the fleet.
