Major fire at Port of Hamburg injures 10 and causes extensive damage

A major fire broke out on August 25 in a warehouse at the Port of Hamburg, triggering multiple explosions and spreading to surrounding storage areas. The blaze, believed to have started when a parked vehicle ignited, involved pressurised gas cylinders, producing a dense cloud of black smoke over Hamburg.

Ten people were injured, including three firefighters and a motorist, with one person in critical condition. About 25 people were evacuated, some by boat. Several hundred firefighters were deployed, and the fire was largely under control after more than 20 hours, though smaller flames and toxic gases remained on site.

The fire disrupted local transport, closing nearby roads temporarily, but major routes have reopened. Shipping operations were affected mostly for inland transport, while ocean shipping continued. Fire investigators are set to examine the site once it is fully safe.
