Malaysian Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said about 146,000 new jobs will be created in the logistics industry by 2020, according to a report in the Star.
The jobs would be generated with the implementation of the Logistics and Trade Facilitation Masterplan (2016-2020), which would turn Malaysia into the preferred logistics gateway to Asia by 2020.
He said that the efficiency of the logistics industry is vital and expected the cargo volume to grow by 8% annually to reach 880 million tonnes by 2020.
The proposed Carey Island Port would help to cater to the growth of the logistics sector. The North Port and West Port were already operating at full capacity, with Port Klang registering 10.8% growth last year, the report quoted Tiong Lai as saying.
