Nineteen seafarers abandoned on sanctioned tanker off UAE for over a year

Nineteen seafarers remain abandoned on the product tanker Global Peace off Al Hamriyah, UAE, after months at anchorage, the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) reports. The vessel, built in 2010, has been lying idle since approximately February, and its crew has not been repatriated.

The crew consists of 17 Indian nationals, one Bangladeshi, and one Ukrainian. They have been aboard for up to 15 months, exceeding the 11-month maximum allowed under the MLC. Their contracts reference fictitious ITF collective bargaining agreements, and the seafarers have been denied wages and proper support. They continue to live and work under difficult conditions on board, with no clear prospect of repatriation.

The tanker was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury in April 2025, complicating the situation. The ship currently has no known flag or insurance.

The ITF is urging UAE authorities and other relevant parties to intervene and secure the safety and return of the crew.
