One missing after cargo and fishing vessels collide off Vietnam

Search and rescue operations are underway off Vietnam’s central coast after a cargo vessel collided with a fishing boat near the Thuan An estuary in Hue province, leaving one person missing.

The accident occurred on the afternoon of October 7, when the cargo ship Thuan Trung 08, sailing northbound, struck the local fishing vessel TTH 96329 TS about 10 nautical miles off the coast. The fishing boat, carrying four crew members, sank shortly after the impact, throwing all on board into the water.

Three fishermen were rescued by the crew of Thuan Trung 08 and brought ashore for medical evaluation and official procedures. One crew member remains unaccounted for.

The Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (VMRCC) dispatched the rescue vessel to the site. Military patrol boats also joined the effort.

The collision is the second maritime accident in Vietnamese waters within a week. On October 4, another fishing vessel sank after colliding with a South Korean-flagged oil tanker off Ninh Thuan province, leaving one fatality.
