One worker killed as Ro-Ro vessel capsizes at Turkish shipyard

One worker was killed and four others injured after the Elmes, a St. Kitts and Nevis–flagged Ro-Ro cargo vessel, capsized during maintenance at Yıldız Shipyard in Istanbul’s Tuzla Shipyards Region.

The 101-metre vessel suddenly listed to port on October 9 while undergoing mechanical repairs. Several workers were thrown into the water as the ship rolled over, prompting an immediate response from the coast guard, firefighters, and medical teams.

Authorities confirmed that 46-year-old Ukrainian national died after becoming trapped beneath an evacuation ramp hatch. His body was later recovered and taken to the Forensic Medicine Institute. Four other injured workers were taken to nearby hospitals.

Built in 1997 by PS Werften Wolgast in Germany, the Elmes (5,104 dwt) was reportedly in drydock for maintenance at the time of the incident. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident.
