Salvage operations continue at the Port of Long Beach following the loss of around 75 containers from the Zim-chartered vessel Mississippi last week. So far, 32 containers have been recovered from the waters surrounding the ship.
The Mississippi, carrying more than 2,400 containers, experienced stack collapses in two separate bays shortly after berthing on 9 September. Some of the fallen containers struck an emissions barge, causing a small fuel leak that was secured on 10 September, with no further leaks reported.
A 500-yard safety zone remains in place around the vessel as response teams work to secure remaining cargo while ensuring the safety of crew and salvage personnel.
Investigations by the US Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board are ongoing to determine the cause of the stack collapses. Port worker union representatives stated that human error by dockworkers has been ruled out.
