The autonomous ship Yara Birkeland made next step closer to launch

The first autonomous and electric vessel in the world found its shipbuilder. The choice fell on Vard, and worth of deal amounts approximately USD 30 million.

We remind you that it is planning to build 120-TEU container ship. The representatives of Vard Company claimed, the ship will be ready by 2020 and gradually move from manned operation to fully autonomous operation by 2022.

The project received USD 15.8 million from the Norwegian government enterprise ENOVA. In 2017 Norwegian agricultural company Yara and international technology group Kongsberg announced a partnership for the building this vessel.

Replacing 40,000 truck journeys a year, the ship will allow to reduce NOx and CO2 emissions, and in such a manner improve sea safety situation.

Let’s remember some particulars of the autonomous ship: deadweight − 3 200 mt and service speed − 6 knots. The final design was decided by the end of Q3 2017, and the delivering ship yard within the first half of 2018.
