Taiwanese carrier Yang Ming has ordered six 13,650-TEU LNG dual-fuel containerships from South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean. The order supports its long-term fleet renewal programme.
The $1.14 billion contract covers deliveries from 2028 to the second half of 2029. Hanwha Ocean will build the ships at its Geoje shipyard. They will expand Yang Ming’s fleet of vessels above 10,000 TEU.
The new containerships will operate on East-West services. They will serve routes between Asia and the US East and West coasts, South America and the Mediterranean.
The ships will use LNG dual-fuel propulsion. Yang Ming will also receive them with ammonia-fuel-ready designs.
The ships will also use several energy-saving technologies. These include wind shields, rudder bulbs and pre-swirl stators. Shore power systems will help cut emissions while the vessels are in port.
Smart-ship systems will support vessel operations. The ships will also feature cybersecurity protection.
The new containerships will operate on services between Asia and the US East and West coasts, South America and the Mediterranean.
This is Yang Ming’s second order from Hanwha Ocean in two years. In September 2025, the carrier ordered seven 15,880-TEU LNG dual-fuel containerships.
The latest order forms part of Yang Ming’s fleet optimisation plan. The carrier expects to add 24 new vessels by 2030. The programme includes 18 LNG dual-fuel ships and six 8,000-TEU methanol dual-fuel-ready containerships.
The LNG-powered vessels will include five 15,500-TEU ships, seven 16,000-TEU ships and the six 13,650-TEU vessels covered by the latest order.
