The disabled LNG carrier MV Arctic Metagaz is adrift and out of control in the central Mediterranean after towing operations failed in severe weather, Libyan authorities have warned. The incident is raising urgent safety and environmental concerns as the damaged vessel continues to drift near key shipping routes.

Libya’s Ports and Maritime Transport Authority reported that the towline attached to MV Arctic Metagaz parted in the early hours of April 2, leaving the vessel in “a state of complete drift.” Attempts to re-establish the tow were unsuccessful due to harsh weather conditions, including winds of up to 40 knots and waves reaching five meters.

The vessel, which suffered an explosion and fire on March 3, has remained unmanned since its crew evacuated. It is believed to still contain residual LNG cargo as well as approximately 900 tonnes of fuel, increasing the risk of pollution or further incidents. Authorities have advised all vessels to keep a minimum distance of 10 nautical miles and report any observed changes.

The wreck is currently drifting near the boundary of Malta’s search and rescue zone, with forecasts suggesting it could move further north toward Maltese or Italian waters. Mediterranean states have expressed concern over the lack of coordinated salvage efforts, warning that the vessel poses a potential environmental hazard.

Libya has acknowledged limitations in handling the situation, citing a lack of suitable port infrastructure and calling for international assistance from the International Maritime Organization and the European Union. Salvage plans remain unresolved as weather conditions continue to hamper operations.

The case of MV Arctic Metagaz underscores the growing risks posed by damaged vessels left adrift in busy maritime regions, particularly when hazardous cargo and fuel remain onboard.
