The crew of the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker Talara are safe after Iranian forces seized the vessel in the Gulf of Oman. The 21-member crew is now accounted for, and the ship is anchored off Bandar Abbas, according to its manager, Columbia Shipmanagement.
Talara was intercepted on November 14 while en route from Sharjah, UAE, to Singapore with a cargo of high sulfur gasoil. Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) personnel boarded the vessel via helicopter and diverted it into Iranian waters for investigation. Tehran claims the tanker was carrying petroleum products “illegally,” prompting the seizure.
Columbia Shipmanagement confirmed that the tanker’s captain contacted the technical manager, and the company is working with regional partners to secure the crew’s release.
Talara, a 73,000 dwt crude oil tanker built in 2010, is managed in Cyprus. Iran’s seizure reflects a pattern of targeting foreign-flag ships in response to geopolitical concerns, often perceived as signaling pressure on adversaries.
