Fatal accident at Hanwha Ocean shipyard

A Brazilian supervisor was killed on September 3 at the Hanwha Ocean shipyard in Geoje, South Korea, during testing on a Petrobras FPSO under construction.

According to Korean media, a platform collapsed during a lifting test, causing the supervisor to fall more than 10 meters into the water. He was rescued in cardiac arrest but later died at the hospital. Two other workers survived with minor injuries after clinging to the damaged structure.

Work at the shipyard has been suspended while the Coast Guard and the Ministry of Employment and Labor investigate possible safety violations.

Unions in South Korea have long raised concerns over safety conditions at major shipyards. This is the second fatal accident at Hanwha Ocean in the past year.
