A deadly confrontation between Cuban border forces and a Florida-registered speedboat has left four people dead and six injured. According to Cuba’s Ministry of the Interior, a border guard patrol boat approached the speedboat near Cayo Falcones, off the northern coast of Villa Clara province, after detecting it inside Cuban territorial waters. Cuban authorities said that as officers moved in to request identification, individuals aboard the speedboat opened fire, wounding the patrol commander.
Border guards returned fire, killing four people on the vessel and injuring six others. The wounded were evacuated for medical treatment.
Cuban state media later reported that the occupants were Cuban nationals living in the United States and alleged that they intended to carry out an infiltration with “terrorist ends.” Officials claimed weapons, Molotov cocktails, body armor, and camouflage gear were found aboard the vessel. These allegations have not been independently verified.
The boat carried Florida registration. Cuban officials indicated that 10 individuals were aboard at the time of the exchange.
Marco Rubio, speaking during a diplomatic visit to the Caribbean, said the United States is investigating the incident but is currently relying on information provided by Cuban authorities. He stated that the confrontation did not involve U.S. government personnel. F
The incident comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Havana, as the U.S. administration continues to apply economic pressure on Cuba, including measures affecting fuel supplies. Cuba is experiencing severe economic strain, and maritime enforcement around the island has intensified. Previous confrontations between Cuban authorities and U.S.-based vessels have occurred, particularly involving alleged smuggling operations, but fatal gun battles remain rare and diplomatically sensitive.
Investigations are ongoing, and further details regarding the identities of those involved and the precise circumstances of the encounter have yet to be released.
