Grimaldi takes delivery of new PCTC with advanced green technologies

Italian shipping company Grimaldi has taken delivery of its new pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) Grande Shanghai, built by China Merchants Heavy Industry (CMHI) Haimen, Breakbulk.news reported.

The vessel is the first of ten 9,000 CEU PCTCs ordered by Grimaldi and measures 220 meters in length and 38 meters in width, with fourteen decks capable of transporting both electric and conventional vehicles.

Grande Shanghai has been awarded the “Ammonia Ready” notation by RINA, allowing future conversion to ammonia fuel, and carries additional class notations including Green Plus, Green Star 3, Comfort Vibration, and Comfort Noise Port. Its design incorporates 5 MWh lithium-ion batteries for hybrid operations, 2,500 m² of solar panels, cold ironing capability, and smart ventilation and air conditioning systems to enhance energy efficiency and reduce emissions.

The vessel features an electronically controlled main engine, an exhaust cleaning system, and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) meeting IMO Tier III standards for NOx emissions. Innovative technologies include an air lubrication system, optimized hull design, and a gate rudder system for improved propulsion and manoeuvrability. A silicon-based hull coating further reduces drag and fuel consumption.

Grande Shanghai is scheduled to begin its maiden voyage on the East Asia–East Africa service in early September, calling at Taicang, China, Mombasa, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The delivery marks a step forward in Grimaldi’s commitment to greener and more efficient shipping.
