South Korea’s shipping giant HMM has announced a major step into autonomous shipping by signing contracts with Avikus to implement AI-based navigation solutions across its fleet. The initiative also includes a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering for joint research and technical collaboration

HMM plans to initially equip 40 vessels with the autonomous navigation technology, with potential expansion to the entire fleet depending on performance results. The goal is to leverage real operational data to enhance AI navigation systems while improving overall fleet efficiency and competitiveness.

The system to be deployed is Avikus’ HiNAS Control, which combines perception, judgment, and control functions. It enables vessels to monitor their surroundings, assess navigational risks, make route decisions, and autonomously adjust speed and course as needed. The technology is designed to optimize fuel efficiency, improve safety, and support more predictable voyage planning.

Under the MOU, HMM will provide operational data and manage deployment, HD Korea Shipbuilding will supply vessel platforms and technical support, and Avikus will deliver and enhance the navigation solutions.

Avikus has already installed HiNAS Control on approximately 350 ships, including over 100 large retrofitted vessels, solidifying its position as a leader in autonomous maritime navigation.
