Maersk Tankers has taken delivery of MV Jane Maersk, its first very large ammonia carrier (VLAC). The move marks the company’s entry into the growing ammonia shipping market.

Built by South Korea’s HD Hyundai Samho, the Danish-flagged vessel has a cargo capacity of 93,000 cubic metres. She can carry both liquefied ammonia and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). It is also the first ammonia carrier delivered by the shipyard.

The 221-metre vessel features cargo-handling systems designed specifically for ammonia. Because ammonia is more toxic, corrosive and denser than LPG, the ship includes additional safety systems. These include a high-level alarm that helps prevent cargo tanks from overfilling during loading.

MV Jane Maersk is the first of five VLACs that Maersk Tankers ordered in late 2023. The remaining vessels will join the fleet by 2028. The company said the programme will add ten gas carriers to its managed fleet. Maersk Tankers currently manages more than 210 vessels across several tanker segments.

The delivery also strengthens HD Hyundai Samho’s position in the ammonia carrier market. The shipyard has secured nine VLAC orders in 2026, bringing its orderbook to 22 vessels worth about $2.55 billion.

Demand for ammonia carriers is growing as the industry looks for lower-carbon energy solutions. Besides its traditional use in fertiliser production, ammonia is gaining attention as a hydrogen carrier and a potential marine fuel. New production and export projects are expected to increase demand for specialised ammonia carriers.
