A reported drone strike sparked a fire aboard the floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) Energos Winter at Egypt’s Port of Damietta on 29 July. The incident has raised new concerns about the growing threat to maritime energy infrastructure in the region.

According to maritime security and industry sources, a drone struck MV Energos Winter while the vessel was alongside the terminal. The fire reportedly spread to the nearby LNG carrier GasLog Salem.

Egyptian authorities confirmed that a fire broke out aboard a regasification vessel and a storage vessel. However, they did not identify the vessels or confirm that a drone caused the incident.

Emergency teams quickly brought the fire under control. Authorities reported no injuries or fatalities and said technical teams were assessing the damage.

Maritime security firm Ambrey assessed the incident as a likely drone strike. Several shipping and security sources reached the same conclusion. No group has claimed responsibility, and Egyptian authorities are still investigating the cause.

Authorities have not announced any disruption to operations at Damietta port.

MV Energos Winter is a 138,250-cubic-metre FSRU owned by U.S.-based Energos Infrastructure. Wilhelmsen Ship Management provides the vessel’s technical, safety and commercial management. The FSRU receives LNG cargoes and regasifies them for Egypt’s domestic gas network.
