Panama’s merchant fleet has reported a 23% reduction in accidents over the past year, reflecting the registry’s intensified focus on safety and inspections, Seatrade Maritime reports. Between July 2024 and June 2025, 253 incidents were recorded, down from 329 in the previous year – a decrease of 76 cases.
The improvement follows a series of targeted measures by the Panama Ship Registry. Annual Safety Inspections (ASI) have been conducted more frequently, control campaigns intensified, and the Precheck system strengthened, allowing ships with deficiencies to be filtered out before they are flagged. This approach has helped to ensure that vessels entering the registry meet high safety and operational standards.
In addition, Panamanian consulates and technical offices have streamlined processes for flagging, issuing permits, and operational supervision. These measures contribute to a more efficient, safer fleet and maintain Panama’s leading position in maritime risk prevention and environmental protection. The registry’s proactive approach aims to reduce operational incidents, improve compliance with international standards, and strengthen the overall reliability of Panama-flagged vessels.
