The cruise ship Sapphire Princess recovered five bodies in the western Mediterranean during a routine voyage, highlighting the ongoing human toll of migration routes at sea.

While sailing from Cagliari to Cartagena, the crew spotted a lifejacket in the water about 80 nautical miles northwest of Algiers. The vessel immediately altered course, and a rescue boat located the first body. Within the next hour, the crew found and recovered four more.

Passengers witnessed parts of the operation and described a somber atmosphere onboard. The cruise line later confirmed that none of the deceased were passengers or crew.

After completing the recovery, Sapphire Princess continued to Cartagena and handed the bodies over to local authorities. The company also offered psychological support to passengers and crew.

Spanish authorities are now investigating a possible link between the bodies and a drifting migrant boat discovered earlier off Murcia. A French Navy patrol vessel had found the boat with three dead and two survivors onboard. The survivors said they had left North Africa weeks earlier in an attempt to reach Spain.

Investigators are working to establish how many people originally boarded the boat and whether more victims may have been lost at sea. They are also examining reports of possible violence during the journey.

The case highlights the ongoing dangers of the western Mediterranean migration route, where hundreds of people die or go missing each year.
