A merchant vessel transiting the Gulf of Aden exchanged gunfire with an armed skiff off Yemen’s southern coast after six armed men approached the ship in what maritime security analysts believe was a likely piracy-related incident.

The encounter occurred at approximately 04:30 UTC on June 10 around 88 nautical miles southwest of Balhaf, Yemen. According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the armed individuals opened fire after approaching the vessel in a small craft.

The vessel’s Armed Security Team responded, leading to a brief exchange of gunfire. The attackers subsequently broke off the approach and departed the area. No injuries among the crew were reported, and the vessel sustained no damage.

While authorities continue to investigate, the circumstances of the incident differ markedly from the missile, drone and unmanned surface vessel attacks that have characterized recent threats to merchant shipping from Yemen’s Houthi movement.

Maritime security assessments indicate the tactics used in the latest encounter are more consistent with traditional piracy operations involving armed skiffs. The attack took place in waters bordering the Gulf of Aden and the Somali Basin, regions historically associated with Somali pirate activity.

The incident comes amid renewed concern over maritime security in the region. Earlier this month, Yemen’s Houthi movement announced its intention to resume attacks against Israeli-linked shipping in the Red Sea and surrounding waters. However, security specialists note that no confirmed Houthi attacks on merchant vessels have been reported in the Southern Red Sea or Bab el-Mandeb in recent days.

According to the latest assessment from the Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC), piracy threats remain present despite seasonal weather conditions that generally restrict small-boat operations farther offshore. The center also reported that three merchant vessels are currently being held by Somali pirates, including an oil products tanker seized in April and two additional vessels captured in recent weeks.

The latest attack follows several suspicious approaches reported in the wider region during May. In separate incidents near Socotra and in the western Indian Ocean, armed security teams aboard merchant vessels fired warning shots after skiffs carrying multiple individuals approached their ships.UKMTO has advised vessels operating in the area to maintain a high level of vigilance and immediately report suspicious activity to regional maritime security authorities.
