A passenger aboard the cruise ship MV Carnival Firenze has died after falling from a stateroom balcony while the vessel was sailing off Catalina Island near Southern California, prompting a federal investigation.
The incident occurred on April 27 during a four-night Baja Mexico itinerary operated from Long Beach. The 135,156 GT cruise ship, carrying more than 4,000 passengers, was transiting in waters off Catalina Island when the woman reportedly fell from her balcony to a lower deck.
Her family, who were travelling with her, immediately alerted ship personnel. The crew initiated onboard emergency procedures, but the passenger was later confirmed deceased.
According to Carnival Cruise Line, law enforcement authorities boarded the vessel while it was alongside at Catalina Island to conduct an initial inspection and collect evidence, a procedure described as standard in such cases. The cruise line stated that its care team is providing support to the family, who have since disembarked and returned home.
The cause of the fall has not yet been determined, and officials have not released the identity of the deceased passenger. Authorities have also not confirmed whether the incident was accidental or if other factors may have been involved.
The vessel continued its scheduled voyage following the incident, proceeding to Ensenada, Mexico, before its planned return to Los Angeles on April 30.
Passenger overboard and balcony fall incidents are a known safety concern in the cruise sector. Industry data suggests that falls overboard occur globally on cruise ships approximately 20–25 times per year, often involving complex human factors.
