The death toll from the sinking of the Turkish-flagged fast catamaran MV FiloJet off Northern Cyprus has risen to 14 after additional bodies were recovered from the wreck.
Another 14 people remain missing following the August 30 accident. The ferry was carrying 259 passengers and eight crew members when it took on water shortly after leaving Kyrenia for Taşucu, Türkiye. Local officials said 239 people were rescued alive.
Search and recovery operations are continuing around the clock with surface vessels and underwater vehicles operated by the Turkish Coast Guard and Turkish Navy. The wreck lies at a depth of about 550 metres off Kyrenia, requiring remotely operated and other specialised underwater equipment.
The latest recoveries bring the number of bodies retrieved from the wreck to six. Authorities are working to identify the recovered victims.
The accident occurred shortly after MV FiloJet left Kyrenia. The vessel began taking on water and later capsized and sank. Investigators are examining the circumstances of the accident, while authorities continue efforts to recover those still missing.
The search operation remains focused on the wreck and surrounding seabed, with the difficult depth limiting conventional diving operations. Turkish naval vessels equipped for deep-water recovery are continuing work at the site.
