A fierce fire broke out early Thursday at Zea Marina in Piraeus, engulfing several moored yachts and leaving three of them sunk. The blaze began around 3:30 a.m. on one vessel for reasons still under investigation and spread rapidly to nearby boats before firefighters could contain it.
Twenty firefighters with eight fire trucks, supported by firefighting and Coast Guard vessels, fought the flames from both land and sea. Despite their efforts, three yachts were completely lost, while a fourth sustained heavy damage and developed a severe list.
At the scene, the fire continued to burn on one of the vessels earlier in the morning. Coast Guard personnel remained on-site, and firefighting efforts were underway.
Authorities quickly deployed anti-pollution barriers to prevent any fuel or debris from spreading in the water. No injuries have been reported.
Zea Marina – one of the Mediterranean’s premier superyacht hubs – sits in the historic harbor of Piraeus. Following its renovation for the 2004 Olympic Games, it became a modern mooring spot with 670 berths for yachts up to 150 meters long.
Greek authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
