South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has reportedly won a $553 million contract to build ten 2,800 TEU feeder containerships tied to HMM, the country’s flagship liner operator.

Shipbroking sources indicate each vessel is valued at roughly $55 million, with deliveries scheduled through December 2028. The order adds to HMM’s broader fleet expansion, which already includes a dozen 13,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel containerships from Korean builders, with eight assigned to HD Hyundai yards.

HMM has also contracted Chinese shipbuilder Huanghai for smaller feeder vessels, including 1,800 TEU and 3,000 TEU units. Currently, HMM ranks eighth globally among liner operators, managing over 90 ships with a combined capacity exceeding 1 million TEU. Beyond container shipping, the group operates in dry bulk, tanker, car, and LPG carrier segments.

The new order underscores HMM’s ongoing strategy to expand capacity across multiple vessel classes while leveraging HD Hyundai’s shipbuilding capabilities.
