Spanish authorities have arrested ten suspected smugglers after a violent chase off Huelva, Maritime Executive reports. The case shows the growing risks for Spanish law enforcement as fast boats carry drugs along the Andalusian coast.
The incident happened on August 17, when a Customs Surveillance patrol boat spotted a suspected smuggling vessel. The boat made dangerous turns and threw drug packages into the sea. The suspects then opened fire on the patrol boat.
Officers returned fire and wounded one suspect. However, a mechanical problem forced them to stop the chase. The injured man was left on a beach near Cadiz and later arrested. The other nine suspects escaped.
Three days later, the Guardia Civil found the smuggling boat and arrested the nine remaining crew members. Officers also seized six tonnes of hashish and another vessel that was supporting the operation.
The incident is another reminder of the dangers of drug-smuggling operations at sea. In 2024, two Spanish officers died when a smuggling boat hit their patrol craft in Barbate. In May 2026, two more officers were killed when two patrol boats collided during a chase.
