The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has intercepted and seized two product tankers in the Persian Gulf on suspicion of illegal fuel trafficking. The operation resulted in the detention of 15 crew members across both vessels, marking a significant escalation in maritime enforcement actions within the region.

According to official reports, the vessels were allegedly transporting approximately 1.5 million liters of smuggled fuel at the time of their capture.

The seizures occurred near the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global energy transit. Iranian naval forces boarded the vessels after identifying what they described as suspicious transshipment activities.

While the specific names and flags of the detained tankers have not been officially disclosed by the IRGC, the ships are reported to be small-to-medium-sized coastal tankers frequently used in regional fuel trade.

The 15 crew members, whose nationalities remain unconfirmed, have been handed over to judicial authorities for further investigation and potential prosecution. The two tankers have been escorted to the port of Bushehra. The situation is currently ongoing as judicial proceedings begin for the detained crew members and the owners of the vessels.

Iran has historically maintained a strict stance against fuel smuggling, which often involves the illicit export of subsidized Iranian petroleum products to international markets. However, such seizures are also viewed through the lens of heightened regional tensions, where the detention of commercial shipping is frequently used as a tool of geopolitical leverage.

Ship operators in the region are advised to maintain high levels of vigilance and ensure strict compliance with all local and international maritime regulations to avoid detention.
