Port of Helsingborg to launch shore power facility for container ships

The Port of Helsingborg in Sweden is set to become the first Scandinavian port to offer onshore power supply (OPS) for container vessels, with a new facility planned for autumn 2026. The OPS installation will provide up to 3.5 megawatts of electricity – enough to power a typical feeder container ship and comparable to the energy use of around 2,000 homes.

This development fulfills a 2019 Environmental Permit Authority requirement for the port to enable shore power connections for container ships within seven years. Built in partnership with Actemium, the facility will reduce emissions of CO₂, NOₓ, SOₓ, hydrocarbons, and particulates, while also improving air quality and noise levels at the port.

The move aligns with upcoming EU regulations mandating shore power for larger vessels by 2030 and supports the port’s commitment to a fossil-free future. Helsingborg already provides shore power for ferries and plans to expand this clean energy solution to container vessels, making the port more attractive to environmentally conscious shipping lines.
