New IMO rules on reporting lost containers at sea take effect in January

The IMO has adopted new amendments, coming into force on January 1, 2026, that will require ships to promptly report lost containers at sea, Lloyd’s Register has announced.

Ship masters must immediately notify nearby vessels, coastal States, and flag Administrations when containers are lost or seen drifting. If the ship cannot report, the company assumes responsibility. Flag States must inform the IMO via the Global Integrated Shipping Information System (GISIS).

Reports must include ship identity, time and location, number of containers lost, presence of dangerous goods, container details, and other relevant information like weather and drift estimates. A final, confirmed report on container loss is also required.

These rules aim to enhance navigation safety, protect the environment, and improve container traceability. Shipowners and crews need to update safety management systems and communication protocols to comply.
